Most travel journalists work as freelancers – and this is becoming increasingly more common as reporters strike out on their own and contract with big publications. Some of the top magazines that cover travel – such as Conde Nast or National Geographic – are difficult to break into if you do not have a previous relationship. That’s why networking is so important.

However, newspapers remain a viable option for travel journalists and are fairly easy to break into – especially if you have a great story from an underreported area.
